The Rule of Saint Benedict
Author: Saint Benedict (Abbot of Monte Cassino.), Leonard Joseph Doyle
Publisher: Liturgical Press
This edition of The Rule of Saint Benedict is being published in conjunction with the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Liturgical Press. The Liturgical Press began in the 1930s to publish books and other materials related to Benedictine monastic life and spirituality. Leonard Doyle's translation of St. Benedict's Rule for Monasteries appeared in 1948 and has remained in print ever since. Generations of monastics, oblates and others whose lives are influenced by monastic spirituality, have encountered the Rule by means of Doyle's work, which remains by far the most widely known and used English version of the Rule. The traditional dates for the thrice-yearly reading of the Rule are included in this edition. Simple, clear text and beautiful cover art enhance the value of this edition. The elegance of the page, as crafted by the master eye of renowned liturgical artist and designer Frank Kacmarcik, OblSB, makes it a treasure to read and study as Benedict intended. With ribbon marker. Leonard J. Doyle (1914-1970) was a gifted translator of German, French, Latin, and Italian works for The Liturgical Press, in addition to operating his own publishing company, Doyle and Finegan. His translations include such titles as Parish Holy Week Missal (1956), The Simplification of the Rubrics(1955), Commentary for Benedictine Oblates (1950), Benedictinism Through Changing Centuries (1958), A History of Benedictine Nuns (1958), among others. After Vatican II he worked on the official liturgical books published by The Liturgical Press, including the Lectionary, the Sacramentary, and the Breviary. His translation from Latin of St. Benedict's Rule for Monasteries, which was published in 1948, is still sold by The Liturgical Press. David W. Cotter, OSB, is a monk of St. John's Abbey and an editor at The Liturgical Press. He is series editor of Berit Olam (The Everlasting Covenant) Studies in Hebrew Narrative and Poetry.
A witty, sophisticated guide to the new principles of modern social behavior, by a psychologist and popular alternative-etiquette-and-ethics guru This is no rule book about forks and calling cards. As a child, Robin Abrahams was bitterly disappointed when her parents forced her to have a lemonade stand rather than a booth for dispensing advice. In Miss Conduct's Mind over Manners, Abrahams, now a psychologist and the popular "Miss Conduct" columnist for The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, tackles the perplexing social dilemmas of our time: - Is it polite to say "Bless you" to a sneezing atheist? - Should a foreign person's name be pronounced in his native accent? - Does knitting at a meeting display a lack of attention or superior multitasking? - Can a restaurant these days still be so fancy that you cannot request a doggie bag with dignity? - What's a nice vegetarian to do if Gypsies give her bread smeared with lard? Bringing to bear the insights of psychology, Abrahams outlines eight steps to more graceful living that can be applied to uncertain situations-and for handling the inevitable mistakes-involving food, religion, children, pets, health, sex, money, and more. With humor, compassion, and gusto, Miss Conduct's Mind over Manners delivers thoughtful and thought-provoking advice for everyone navigating the complex world of modern human interaction.

Basil of Caesarea (AD 32978), called the Great by later generations, was one of the fourth centurys greatest theologians and pastors. His influence on the foundation of monastic life was enormous. As he toured the early ascetic communities, members would ask Basil about various aspects of living the Gospel life. Their questions and Basils replies were taken down by tachygraphers and eventually became the Small Asketikon, first published in 366. The Regula Basilii is a Latin translation of this work, done in 397. It is one of the major sources of the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Benedict recommends it to zealous monks, calling it the rule of our holy father Basil. This volume represents a new Latin edition, translated and annotated in English by Anna M. Silvas. It also includes three extra questions and answers that survive only in the Syriac translation. Silvas balances masterfully between the rigors of academic research and the interests of an intelligent, non-specialist readership. This volume promises to become an indispensable resource in understanding both the history and the spirituality of monastic life.

Learn from a master of quantitative finance the rules that made him a success. The UnRules presents the dynamic rules for success in the age of exponential information. Written by Igor Tulchinsky, the trader behind global quantitative investment management firm WorldQuant, this book is more than just another Big Data guide for financial wonks — it’s a prescriptive, inspirational book for everyone navigating the tidal waves of the information age. Data is everywhere, coming at us in a never-ceasing, ever-rising river that threatens to overwhelm us. Tulchinsky shows us, however, how natural patterns underlie that data — patterns that may dictate life or death, success or failure. The marriage of man and machines has allowed scientists to explore increasingly complex worlds, to predict outcomes and eventualities. This book demonstrates how to exercise real intelligence by discerning the patterns that surround us every day and how to leverage this information into success in the workplace and beyond. Igor Tulchinsky has spent his career discerning meaningful patterns in information. For decades, Tulchinsky has been at the forefront of developing predictive trading algorithms known as alphas — a quest that has led Tulchinsky to explore the nature of markets, the fundamentals of risk and reward, and the science behind complex nonlinear systems. Tulchinsky explains what we know of these systems, both natural and man-made, in accessible and personal terms, and he shares how alphas have driven his success as an investor and shaped his central “UnRule,” which is that no rule applies in every case. As markets evolve, even the most effective trading algorithms weaken over time. Decades of creating successful alphas — and learning how to effectively transform them into strategies — have taught Tulchinsky about the need to combine flexibility and focus, discipline and creativity when building complex models. At a time when data and computing power are exploding exponentially, The UnRules provides an expert introduction to our increasingly quantitative world.

Hi, how are you? Yes, I am talking to you, the reader of the this book's description. It's rude not to answer a person when they ask you a question. OK, I get it, 4th wall breaking is overdone. Get over it. This book, Villains Rule, is a fantasy action-comedy which you have to read. Not because it redefines the genre, far from it. But rather for what it contains. A villain's tale. How often do you get to read a story where the villain is the protagonist? No, not an anti-hero, or a brooding monster, nor a hero thinly disguised as a villain. And not evil. If you want evil, take that nonsense to therapy. No, I mean a villain's villain. The ones who use their power because they can, while morality is only a philosopher's complex. This is the story of Jackson Blackwell, the Shadow Master and the top villain adviser. Sadly, even the top villain occasionally gets double-crossed. Trapped in one of the fantasy realms, Jackson has to use his skill and wits to exploit the rules, points out the genre flaws, undermine godly authority, and win the day. Because, that is what villains should do, shouldn't they? Read this book, have a few laughs, and find out.
