Who or what is 'anti-national'? The question was foregrounded in a series of unprecedented events that unfolded in Jawaharlal Nehru University from February 2016. Over the next few months, sections of the television, print and social media turned the country into a choric chamber of hate, riveting national attention. The proliferating 'charges' produced great political and intellectual disquiet in the JNU community of students and teachers. As a creative response, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association organized a teach-in for a month between 17 February and 17 March 2016. The lectures addressed the meanings, histories and experience of nationalism, and its unresolved dilemmas, in India and beyond. The teach-in lectures, which were initially intended for members of the JNU community, and delivered principally by JNU teachers, soon gained unanticipated audiences across India and in international forums. Reports and translations of the lectures, live streamed on YouTube, made for a reach that echoed well beyond the 'Freedom Square', the area in front of JNU's Administrative Block, which became the space of this intellectual and political occupation. The book, therefore, is both an archive of that historic moment and a tribute to the effort that succeeded in refocusing national attention on the university as the space for sustaining serious, well-historicized and critical thought.
Light on the Page
Author: Ranald J. Macdonald
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
The poems of Ranald Macdonald show a unique imagination at work. His subjects are diverse, from the classical world of Egypt and Greece, to a celebration of nature, to the intimacies of personal relationships, all handled with a light, expert touch. The exploration is probing, but always sensitive, with an exquisite eye for the bright original image. From the entirely transparent, direct, statement, to complexities which take us into new emotional and intellectual territory, these poems have an impressive agility. There is a metaphysical quality to them which excites the mind, but their fine, gentle, knowing touch also stirs the heart. .."both the thought and the language are lucid and positive" Kathleen Raine, From The naming of the Beasts, Chapman Publishing 1996 "In these poems there are enquiry and wonder as well as a quiet spirituality which transcends the sectarianism of the European experience" Richard Montgomery, From Lapwing Publications, 2nd Collection "Mankind is the world's focus of meaning...though contentious humanism is a key...the book is saturated with religious consciousness." Basil du Tout, Lines review 143, December 1997 'The poems open the door to a realm that gives me deep spiritual peace. I feel so thankful that I found his words, they are a real treasure... I think he touched with his words a realm that is beyond words and that realm can never be destroyed, even when the words are missing." Annerose De Czuyenaire Royalties from this book are being donated to 'Cois Nore', the wonderful cancer support centre in Kilkenny, Ireland, from whom Ranald and his family received so much love and support during his illness. http: //www.coisnore.ie

A good sketch starts with good bones. Often challenging and overwhelming to sketchers, the fourth book in the Urban Sketching Handbook series uses drawings and simple steps to explain the concepts of perspective in practical and useful ways for on-site sketching. Most books are either too abstract or don't provide enough information that relates to what you actually do when you're out in the busy, wide world about to start a drawing. Where do you start? How do you edit what you see to flatten and shrink it onto your paper? How does perspective work? The Urban Sketching Handbook: Understanding Perspective helps you learn to think like an architect, to draw buildings and spaces by reducing what you see to simple, basic shapes, then adding layers in simple steps, and finally finishing your sketch with detail, tone, and color--in accurate perspective. Full of helpful tips, architect and illustrator, Stephanie Bower even de-constructs sketches to show you how to create them! Once you understand perspective, it will change the way you see the world--you'll see perspective everywhere. Some of the key concepts explored in this volume are: - Basic Terms - Basic Spatial Principles - Types of Perspective - Building a Sketch in Layers - Special Conditions

When looking at the travel journals of Giancarlo Iliprandi, one of the masters of Italian graphic design, you can see how sketching can become a way of looking at reality, and therefore a way of designing communication. Travel journals and bundles of paper filled with sketches and drawings show, much like the engine underneath the bonnet, the processes that make Iliprandi tick. As he himself says «action precedes thought» and, in this case, it is the sketch precedes the birth of the idea.
